Paul Pope
Over the past 6 months or so I’ve noticed some great illustrations in GQ magazine and wondered who the artist was. The first was a two page illustrated guide to Japan, the second an illustration to accompany an article on pre-Super Bowl player hijinks, and the third an illustrated guide to the resurgent burlesque scene. By some coincidence that I cannot recall, I discovered the artist to be Paul Pope, well known for his work in comic books, though not by me, as I stopped reading these in high school and had deplorable tastes up to that point anyway. While I remain a non-reader of comic books, I really appreciate Pope’s line work, which is simultaneously loose, expressive, and precise. Poke around his Flickr offerings for more examples of his work.
