Bathroom Remodel Update
If you haven’t seen the previous bathroom reno post you can check it out here and see what it looked like before we got started.
I’m not quite ready for the big reveal. In fact I just reinstalled our toilet tonight for the 2nd time. The first time ended up having a slow leak that didn’t show up for a week. This picture was taken as I was starting to dry fit the tiles for the floor. You can see we have the tiles on shower on. We placed them vertically to match the direction of the floor tiles and to make the ceiling look a bit higher. As of this photo they have not been grouted, but we went with a white grout to be plain and simple.
This photo gives you an idea of the radient heat floor matts we installed. There are a bunch of companies out there but in the end I went with ThemoSoft because they were the least expensive, less than $400 for that mats and all the stuff that goes with them, and the most helpful on the phone. They even have some great how-to vids on their site. Because the bathroom was already wired for an electric baseboard heater I simply tore that out and rerouted the wiring. The hardest part was snaking the wiring through the wall to the thermostat. For some reason my interior walls are filled with rocks so whenever I drill a hole from the basement to the inside of the wall I get a mouth full of dirt. Oh the sacrifices one makes for the little luxuries. The heat works great though and only costs around 5 cents a day to run so a few face fulls of wall dirt is a small price to pay in the end.
This last photo is of my wife standing on the finished tiles. We got 12″ x 24″ charcoal porcelain tiles. These babies were heavy, hard to cut and just a huge pain to intall overall. But like the face full of dirt I think they were well worth a hard day’s work.
At the moment all that’s left is to re-paint the walls. I’ll wait until then to post the big reveal. In the meantime if you’re thinking of doing something like this but are a bit intimidated, don’t be. I’m a rookie when it comes to this stuff, the trick is to ask a lot of questions take your time and have a wife willing hold your sandwich for you while you bite it because your hands are too dirty to hold it yourself.
