James Jean

James Jean is a Los Angeles, Ca based artist with a wicked style and a pretty diverse and prestigious client list. But what excites me most are his sketches. Not only do they show insights into his process, but it uncovers a very personal side to the artist.  From his website bio: “ Since 2007, he has stopped illustrating in favor of personal paintings, book projects, and gallery shows, summoning faded memories and tracing fleeting arabesques.”

Generic/Specific Zine

These are pictures of the Generic/Specific Zine, created for the Generic Zine Exchange.

In the Art Studio at The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Amherst, MA, visitors were invited to draw specific items from memory on separate sheets of paper and then anonymously deposit their drawings face-down into a box. The drawings were then scanned and arranged digitally. Recipients of the zines are also invited to be a participant in this collaboration by adding their own drawings. Pencils provided! The project was coordinated and designed by Art Studio Educators Diana MacKenzie and Meghan Burch whith help from The Carle’s volunteers and student workers.

Kim is a great illustrator I’ve become acquainted with though my wife who works at the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art. She has a fun unique and very cohesive style that includes printed textures and patterns as wells as digital media. If you have eyes in your head you’ve probably seen her work. Some of her clients include American Express, Time Magazine and How Magazine. Check out her site to see more.
