Another Memorial Day weekend at Art All State. The 2010 Art All State at the Worster Art Museum was another great experience. For those who are not familiar, Art All State is a like the high school championship for art students in Massachusetts, only instead of competing students break into groups of 18 with two artist mentors (one being myself) and work together to build an installation exhibited in the museum. This year my fellow mentor and I choose rice and string as the materials students could use for their installation. We were also given a huge bolt of charcoal felt as a surprise material for the piece. We looked at three pieces of art from the Museum’s collection to create a concept for the project:

• John Farnham’s Gentleman Pensioner to Elizabeth
• Do-Ho Suh’s who am we?
• KTICIC Foundation
  

The student quickly got to work. Their concept played with the idea of individualism and community.

The students did a great job it was a pleasure to work with them. What an amazing piece of art.

Stevesie recently wrote down some thoughts about why Apple does not allow Flash on it’s mobile devices. I have to say he has some good arguments. The strange thing for me though is the title of the letter. Thoughts on Flash seems very casual. Especially for a large company like Apple. There is a lot at stake for both Apple and Adobe in a letter like this and portraying it like it’s just some thoughts written down almost seems irresponsible or at best fake casual, which has been part of Apple’s brand for a long time I suppose. I’m Here, the short Spike Jones film is now available to watch in it’s entirety. I just watched it and really enjoyed it. The styling is very Spike Jones. Over all it’s a good love story with a good sound track. You can see the film on its site : http://www.imheremovie.com/.

What I liked best about the film is how quiet it felt. Every moment seemed thoughtful and sincere and some how the robots made it even more so. It was interesting to see Robots acting as humans. If Jones didn’t use robots and had the main character be humans the story would change dramatically from a love story to some sort of demented horor film.

I’ve been looking for a back up solution that would work for both my wife and I for awhile. When I first got my big old iMac I used Time Machine (Apple’s auto back up) with an external hard drive, but when we got my wife a Mac Book Pro it became a pain to share the drive back and forth. Most of the time it would wipe out one of out back ups and replace it with the one from the other computer. It was also hard for her to get in the habit of plugging everything in and backing up and it was a pain to trouble shoot. We could just got another external back up but I liked the idea of having everything on one place. Mostly more drives mean more things, more cords more trying to fix stuff when it doesn’t work. I looked at Apple’s Time Capsule and it received mixed reviews. Some people said it quit on them after 18 or 19 months, others said it was slow. Further research revealed that a lot of the bad reviews were from people who didn’t understand the product or reviewed the first generation. I spoke with Jace (what an Apple store kinda name) at the Apple store who told me his had been working fine for over 2 years with no problems and that most people with problems covered their Time Capsule so that heat from the hard drive couldn’t escape there for burning out the power supply. The new 802.11n simultaneous dual band Time Capsule uses a server grade hard drive and broadcasts both a 2.4 and 5 GHz signal. I set it up quick and easy and connected both my wife’s and my computer to it. So far so good. Our overall network speed is faster than our 2 year old AirPort Extreme and I haven’t noticed a big difference in network speed even when the Time Capsule is backing up both computers at the same time. I even downloaded the new Massive Attack at the same time with no hang-ups. SO far I’m very happy with the purchase. I’m a busy guy so a set and forget it solution is great. I love not having wires and the thing is faster than out Airport was (anyone need an Airport? I’ll give you a deal). I’ll let you know in 18 months (or sooner ) if this was worth it.

With L.L. Bean’s faithful babyboomer and beyond customers increasing in years they have wisely added a new Signature collection of clothing and accessories designed by, Alex Carleton, geared towards today’s 30 somethings like myself. Though my initial reaction was skeptical I have to say I’m happily surprised. The Men’s collection is fitted, simple and classic all around, and the women’s line is strong as well. There are a few women’s pants that are still a bit “mom-jeans-ish” and I’m not a fan of the butt pockets on the front, but over all a good showing. Clothes I wouldn’t mind my wife or myself wearing. Typical of L.L. Bean, the pricing is reasonable as well.
