I am a little hesitant in referring to Nate Duval as a commercial artist. On one hand, his ability to maintain a full portfolio across a variety of clientele does in fact make him commercial. On the other hand, Nate is so darn good at making exciting imagery, it almost seems like an insult. Nate, if you’re reading this, I mean no disrespect in my terminology and do not by any means hope to diminish your illustrative street cred.

Nate’s well thought out line work paired with a pallet of local color allows his work to be both simple and meticulously detailed.

Robert Burden creates the type of art that I look at and wonder “why didn’t I think of that?”. On top of having a fantastic handle on rendering and color, his subject matter makes his art a sophisticated meeting place of high and lowbrow art. The magnificence of the paintings of his childhood toys mirror the magnificence he saw in these action figures as a child.

Over the last few years I’ve been taking self portraits in public bathrooms and categorizing and archiving them on my computer as a journal. My original concept for Public Rest was to publish a book from all the photos describing when and where each was taken and maybe a small fact or memory from each place. Though the concept lends itself to humor my idea was to seriously try to take good and interesting photos, not obscene, corny or fake. Some came from a nice digital camera, some from the still photo setting on my video camera and others were taken with my cell phone.

Eventually the idea developed into making a blog. The blog would not only allow me to post Public Rest photos but readers as well. I bought the domain name and Public Rest was born. I still plan on publishing a book but have decided it will be more interesting if it includes your photos as well.

The site still has some kinks in it and I’ll be adding new features as time goes goes on but I think it’s ready for people to start submitting. Please check it out and submit your own Public Rest photos. It may even get published.

FFFFOUND is an “inspirational image-bookmarking experience”, whatever that means. FFFFOUND is way easier to understand when you visit the site yourself and give it a test drive. It has proved to me to be just as inspiring as they claim, I make sure to visit it each day since my first stop there.

The site is invitation only and always has the coolest photos, drawings and images up on the web. It is a wealth of info for drawers, designers, photographers and artists. With a bare-bones simple design it is easy to jump from picture to picture (especially when you figure out that you can hit the “J” key to see what’s next). There are also plenty of opportunities for tangents, next to each image are a set of three more that you may also be into.

Everyone probably knows about this already (and so did I), but Tokyo Plastic has a great site that also features lots of work that’s also really great. The design, animation, and audio are so tight it’s offensive, and the commercial with the two Yaris’s racing is totally hilarious. Check it out for sure.
