Just got a Magic Mouse for my birthday, and I do love the design and feel of it. My boyrfriend bought it for me because he hated how the roller ball on the mighty mouse kept jamming up.

Trouble is, I use those side buttons ALL the time.
I’ve had the mouse installed for 15 minutes and have gone for the squeeze about 15 times!

But, this article gave me hope that there is a 3rd party plugin to help.
Unfortunately, BetterTouchTool is only compatible with Snow Leopard or Lion and I’m on ‘classic’ Leopard.

Luckily Magic Prefs has a version compatible with my operating system.
When installing it told me that I didn’t have a bluetooth device connected, and then something about needing write permissions to the folder, but I ignored these and opened the preferences from the icon in the top right of the screen. Takes a while to find the setting you want, but it’s easy to play with until you’re happy.

Thanks all for your help, I’m delighted to have found a solution.
Now, I’ve just got to unlearn 4 years of side squeezing!

Hmm… I’ve always loved the styling of Apple’s mice, but they always seem to fall flat on their face when it comes to functionality. I’m also a Web designer/developer, and I NEED a mouse with a thumb button – I have it mapped to the Command/Control button, and I really can’t work without it…
