This movie looks crazy! The Fall, directed by Tarsem, was shot on location in 18 different countries, and has a plot vaguely reminiscent of The Adventures of Baron Munchausen. The director also directed The Cell (2000), with Jenifer Lopez, and (a surprise for me) the video for R.E.M.’s “Losing My Religion”. Check out the official site for a higher def version of the trailer.
Check out these and other cool sculptures by Mike Rea made entirely from wood. Show here are a wooden drum set, a wooden M-16, and a replica of the Ark of the Covenant. Visit the site to see a time machine, a wood-mech suit for Stephen Hawking, a set of wooden power tools, a space capsule, and other things not generally encountered in wooden form. Rae claims to build everything from memory and eschews any sort of planning; this explains the cartoonish vaguely over-sized scale of everything. [via Fecal Face]
Recently had the chance to catch up with an old classmate, Dana Woulfe, at RISD, where we both spoke to a class about illustration and design. Dana in involved with Project SF, an international artist collective featuring some great artists and designers. Check it out.
Oh man, who doesn’t like antlers? we at Farmidable sure do. What you see here is a new pattern in production; and, word to the wise, if you don’t like antlers: too bad.
As promised, we’ve released a new pattern today! Pine Boughs is available in the gallery, so click on over and download it. You’re guaranteed to find peace and serenity amongst these idyllically drooping boughs of pine! It may be noted that this is a somewhat belated entry in the line of Farmidable patterns inspired in some way by Japanese wood block prints and samurai therein.
There’s this thing going on over at Kitsune Noir where cool desktop wallpapers by great artists are being given away for free. While this is far from an original concept (ahem…), it’s an initiative we at Farmidable are fully supportive of. Anyway, this desktop designed by Dan Funderburgh was just posted today. Dan has some great work involving repeating patterns and super-cool ornamentation of every-day or bellicose objects like vacuum cleaners and battle axes. Check out the largest versions and get a full-detail glimpse of the umbrella.
Found this cool deer-friendly mounted deer head from Cardboard Safari in the newest issue of ReadyMade (check it out, the new issue is available in its entirety for free online [!]). Now your living space can look like a hunting lodge from a world where animals are made of flat cardboard sections and are “highly flammable”. If you ask me, that’s a world I want to live in. If the cardboard’s just not doing it for you, the real thing is always an option…
Check out this super cool new[ish] poster from eboy. The pink building monster smashing the bus is among the highlights. It’s all the crazy little details (like the nude sunbathers and the guy on fire) that make eboy’s work so much fun. If you’ve got a couple more seconds, check out this great video they made about Shakespeare. If you’ve got even more time, comb through the records for the ones about Einstein and Freud.
Happened upon some really great looking cookies in the window of Girard Gourmet while walking around La Jolla Village. Among the many great forms these cookies take are dogs, seahorses, seals, frogs, sailboats, fish, birds, owls, and commemorative La Jolla plaques. Couldn’t resist purchasing an owl cookie, and found a pretty good lemon butter cookie under all the ornamentation.
